The Man in the Storm
There is an old story that has been told for centuries.
One day, the Sun, the Moon, the Wind and the Rain sat together watching the world below. Don't ask me where they found a bench large enough. The important part is that they were there.
As all beings with too much time eventually do, they made a bet.
A man was walking down the road wearing a thick suit.
The challenge was simple.
Whoever could make the man remove his suit would be declared the most powerful.
The Wind stood first.
Finally, something worthy of his ego.
He inhaled deeply and unleashed everything he had.
Trees bent. Dust flew. Birds questioned their life choices. The man's hat disappeared into another postcode. But something interesting happened.
The stronger the wind blew, the tighter the man held onto his suit. He buttoned it. He grabbed the collar. He leaned into the storm.
The Wind became furious
More force. More speed. More aggression. The suit stayed exactly where it was.
Exhausted, the Wind admitted defeat
The Rain smirked. "This is easy."
Dark clouds gathered. Lightning performed unnecessary special effects. Rain poured so heavily that fish probably started applying for residency permits. The man shivered. The road became muddy. His clothes became heavier. Every step demanded more strength than the last.
He hugged the suit even tighter. If anything, he wished he had worn another jacket underneath it.
Still...He kept walking.
Then came the cold. Then the dark clouds. Then the long hours when the Sun seemed nowhere to be found.
Yet somehow, that man refused to surrender his coat.
I have often wondered if we have been telling the wrong version of that story.
Perhaps the greatest lesson was never about which force eventually won the competition.
Perhaps it was about the man.
Because while everyone focuses on the weather, nobody stops to admire the person who endured it.
Life has a funny way of behaving like the Wind.
Just when you think you're making progress, something pushes back.
A rejection letter arrives.
The promotion goes to someone else.
Your business struggles.
You lose money.
People who once believed in you suddenly become motivational speakers explaining why your dream was unrealistic in the first place.
Apparently, everybody becomes an expert after your first setback.
Then comes the Rain…The kind that isn't made of water.
Financial pressure.
Family responsibilities.
Anxiety.
Loneliness.
The quiet fear that maybe everyone else has figured life out except you.
And just when you think the storm has passed, another one arrives wearing a different disguise.
Life rarely sends challenges one at a time. It prefers group projects.
The remarkable thing, however, is that storms have never been permanent.
History has never recorded a hurricane that lasted forever.
Every night has eventually surrendered to morning.
Every winter has made room for spring.
Every storm, no matter how violent, eventually runs out of rain.
Which means your assignment has never been to stop the storm.
Your assignment is to survive it.
Some of us spend so much energy asking, "When will life get easier?"
Perhaps the better question is, "Will I still be standing when it does?"
That is where victory lives…Not in avoiding hardship, But in refusing to surrender to it.
We have reached the second half of the year (Happy New Month by the way).
For some people, the first six months have been everything they prayed for.
For others, it has felt like six months of chaos, failure, stagnation, one bad email after another.
Dreams delayed.
Plans interrupted.
Doors closed.
Savings reduced.
Faith tested.
If that is you, hear this.
The year is not over!
One difficult chapter has never been the whole book.
One disappointing season has never determined the harvest.
One storm has never been powerful enough to cancel the sunrise.
Do not let temporary suffering convince you that permanent defeat has arrived.
The world has a habit of celebrating people after they overcome, while conveniently forgetting what they had to endure before anyone noticed them.
We admire the diamond. We forget the pressure.
We applaud the champion. We ignore the years nobody was watching.
We celebrate the success. We overlook the countless days when giving up would have been easier.
So wear your coat.
Button it properly.
Straighten your shoulders.
Tuck in your tie.
Walk with confidence, even if your knees are shaking.
Let the Wind do its worst.
Let the Rain fall if it must.
Let people laugh.
Let critics predict your failure.
Let circumstances test your resolve.
Just don't surrender your coat.
Because suffering has an expiry date.
Storms have a finish line.
And defeat only becomes permanent the moment you agree with it.
The world is not waiting to see whether the Wind was strong.
It is waiting to see whether you were stronger.
Keep walking.
Your sunshine is closer than you think.
